Graduate Fellowship History of Science, Technology or Environment (Deadline:January 5, 2006)
Graduate Fellowship
History of Science, Technology or Environment
University of South Carolina
DEADLINE JANUARY 5, 2006
The University of South Carolina seeks applicants for one graduate fellowship in the history of 20th century US or comparative science, technology or the environment. The fellowship fully covers a Ph.D. student's tuition and provides a highly competitive stipend for at least four academic years (subject to satisfactory progress). This fellowship is funded by a National Science Foundation grant for the Nanotechnology in Society Network Node at the University of South Carolina.
The student's research project need not focus on nanotechnology per se, though the fellowship requires an average commitment of 20 hours per week to an interdisciplinary project focused on the social, ethical and science studies-oriented dimensions of nanotechnology. The specific duties of the fellowship will be arranged in consultation between the student and the grants' PI and co-PIs, and may include web design, teaching, research assistance or administration. USC has assembled a large interdisciplinary research team approaching nanotechnology and other emerging technologies from the humanities, social sciences, sciences and engineering; this group is an intellectual resource for graduate study, though it will not dictate any particular research project or methodology.
USC's Department of History is especially strong in 20th Century US history and the history of the US South. History faculty can supervise US or comparative research projects in the history of technology, science, and the environment, as well as more broadly based social, political and cultural history.
Interested candidates are urged to contact Ann Johnson, a co-PI on this project at annj@sc.edu. Further information about the USC graduate program in history and application materials for the Department of History are available at http://www.cas.sc.edu/hist/Graduate%20Program/gradprogentrypage.htm.
Further information on the Nanotechnology in Society Network Node and Nano STS program at USC are available at http://nsts.nano.sc.edu/ index.html
The University of South Carolina strongly encourages applications from candidates who will enhance the diversity of the university. Candidates should submit a standard application for the Ph.D. program in the Department of History http://www.gradschool.sc.edu/ and specify an interest in this fellowship.
REMINDER: Completed Applications at the USC Graduate School are due by January 5, 2006.
